Wood d to ground cover for Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary.
Release Date: Wednesday, July 27, 2011
Recycling billboards were displayed around the convention center during AWFS Fair.
AWFS Fair’s recycling program reduced bulk waste from trade show exhibitors, once sent to landfill, by a 6-to-1 ratio and shredded wood scrap into ground cover for Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, a Las Vegas-based nonprofit that provides a safe haven for animals that live in the wild.
The recycling program was a cooperative effort between Weima, the Las Vegas Convention Center and AWFS show general contractor, Freeman. Weima America provided the show with a WL13 shredding system, which ground demonstration wood scrap and discarded exhibitors' shipping and packaging materials. "Destroy Responsibly" billboards were located throughout the convention center during the show and attendees could view the shredder in the Central Machinery Hall.
Fair attendees could see the shredder recyling wood scrap into ground cover.
“Everyone really got behind the program this year,” said Angelo Gangone, executive vice president, AWFS. “As an industry, we are committed to reducing waste, and the recycling program at the show gives us a way to help deserving non profits as well.”

AWFS chose WEIMA America as the official recycling partner
for this year’s AWFS Fair in Las Vegas. WEIMA provided its
WL 15 shredding system to help reduce the amount of waste
generated during the show. The shredding system was in
operation during show hours outside the freight doors in the
Central Machinery Hall. During that time, the shredder
ground all of the demonstration wood scrap as well as any
discarded shipping or packing materials used throughout the
show. “By shredding the materials, the amount of waste was
significantly reduced therefore limiting the amount of
dumpsters and wood waste that went to our landfills,” said
Angelo Gangone, Executive Director, AWFS. In a further
effort at being “green” WEIMA installed a cross-belt magnet
to remove all the metal from the waste which included nails,
stables, etc. This way the clean material was able to be
shred and donated to the local Spring Preserve for
landscaping mulch. With the help of the non-profit
organization Greener Vegas, none of the shredded material
was thrown away. “We are excited to be involved in a program
where we can help positively impact our environment and hope
to continue this for years to come,” says the
Marketing Manager for WEIMA America, Inc.
